Rocco Granata is nu 74 jaar oud en woont in België. Hij is daar net zo bekend als Eddy Merckx, Jacques Brel en Jean Marie Pfaff. Die Flamen und die Wallonen lieben ihn gleichermaßen. Den sympathischen Italiener, der damals im Alter von 10 Jahren mit seinen Eltern und seiner Schwester aus Kalabrien (ganz im Süden Italiens), ins graue, regnerische „Waterschei“, nach belgisch Limburg zog. Sein Vater gehörte zu den ersten Gastarbeitern, der in Belgien zusammen mit vielen tausend anderen Italienern im Bergbau arbeitete.

Der kleine Rocco war schon damals ein hervorragender Akkordeonspieler. Gegen den Willen seines Vaters setzte er sich als junger Mann durch, fuhr mit dem Zug nach Brüssel und sah dort in einem Musikladen sein Traumakkordeon. Es sollte 25.000 belgische Franken kosten. Nur, soviel Geld besaß er nicht. Kurzum konnte Rocco den Ladenbesitzer überreden, ihm das Akkordeon auf Ratenzahlung schließlich mitzugeben. Irgendwie hatte Rocco es geschafft, den Mann für seine Träume zu begeistern.

Mit 20 Jahren komponierte Rocco dann auf diesem Akkordeon den Hit Marina, einfach so, mitten in einer Kneipe. Dies war während eines seiner Auftritte in Diest. Die anderen Musiker aus der Band wollten eine kleine Pause machen. Rocco aber spielte noch ein bisschen weiter. An der Wand hing eine Zigarettenwerbung von der Marke Marina, und auf dem Poster daneben war eine bildschöne junge Frau abgebildet.

Rocco summte eine Melodie: Marina, Marina, Marina…..er spielte ein wenig auf seinem Akkordeon. So entstand die Melodie aus dem nichts…

Ein Hit wurde geboren. Am nächsten Tag schrieb er einen Text zu seiner fröhlichen Melodie. Zu seiner Ernüchterung wollte keine Plattenfirma dieses Lied haben. Aber wieder gab Rocco nicht auf und gab den Song in Eigenregie heraus. Auf eigene Kosten ließ er dreihundert Schallplatten pressen. Plötzlich wurde das Interesse am Kauf dieser Schallplatte immer größer. Jeder wollte das Lied hören! Es wurde ein Superhit, und weltweit können noch heute sehr viele Menschen diese Melodie singen, wenn sie den Namen „Marina“ hören.

Der Song wurde unzählige Male bis zum heutigen Tage als Coverversion herausgebracht. „Marina“ wurde mindestens hundert Millionen Mal verkauft, womöglich sogar noch viel mehr. Genaue Zahlen möchte Rocco nicht nennen. Fest steht aber, weil er alle Rechte an dem Song behalten hat, ist er heute ein wohlhabender Mann.

Er ist Sänger, Komponist und hat eine eigene Plattenfirma. In den siebziger Jahren waren bei ihm u.a. George Baker Selection, Tee Set und Alexander Curly unter Vertrag. Bereits seit 44 Jahren lebt er mit seiner großen Liebe Rosi zusammen. Er spielt gerne Golf und trinkt gerne ein Gläschen Wein mit Freunden. Zuhause mit den Kindern und Enkelkindern wird Pasta gegessen und der italienische Lebensstil fern ab der Heimat in Belgien genossen. So fühlt Rocco sich am wohlsten. Rocco Granata ist so etwas wie die Symbolfigur der Italiener, der Gastarbeiter, der etwas erreicht hat! Eben eine rührende Erfolgsgeschichte. Darauf ist er sehr stolz und freut sich sehr darüber, dass nun im Jahr 2013 sein Leben verfilmt wurde.The Flemish and the Walloons both love the friendly Italian, who left Calabria (in Southern Italy) with his parents and sister at age 10, to come to the grey, rainy “Waterschei” in Belgian Limburg. Even in those days, little Rocco was a fantastic accordion player. As a young man and against his father’s will, he got into a train to Brussels and found the accordion of his dreams in a music shop. It was supposed to cost 25,000 Belgian Francs, but he didn’t have that kind of money. Rocco finally managed to convince the shop owner to let him take the accordion home and pay it off in instalments. Somehow, Rocco had managed to inspire the man by his dream.

At age 20, Rocco composed the hit song ‘Marina’ on his accordion. Just like that, in a pub. This was during one of his gigs in a pub in Diest. The other musicians of the band he was playing with wanted to take a short break. Rocco, however, decided to continue playing. On the wall, there was a cigarette ad for the brand Marina and the poster next to it showed a beautiful young woman.

Rocco hummed a melody: Marina, Marina, Marina…..he played a bit on the accordion and the melody suddenly appeared from nowhere…

A hit was born. The next day, he wrote the lyrics to his happy melody. However, he was soon brought back down to earth when no recording company wanted this song. Once again, Rocco didn’t give up and produced the song by himself. At his own cost, he had three hundred records made. Suddenly, interest in the record became bigger and bigger. Everybody wanted to listen to the song! It became a hit, and even today plenty of people can sing along the melody when they hear the name Marina.

Up to today, numerous cover versions have been released. “Marina” has been sold at least a hundred million times, possibly even more often. Rocco does not want to reveal the true numbers. However, one thing is certain: he kept all the rights to the song, which has made him a very wealthy man.

He is a singer, songwriter and has his own recording company. In the seventies, he had George Baker Selection, Tee Set and Alexander Curly under contract. For 44 years, he has been living together with his big love Rosi. He loves to play golf and enjoys a glass of wine with his friends. At home, he eats pasta with his children and grandchildren and enjoys the Italian lifestyle far away from Italy, in Belgium. This is how Rocco enjoys his life the best. Rocco Granata is something like a symbol to the Italians, the immigrant worker who made it! A touching success story. He is very proud of what he has achieved and is delighted that his life is now being turned into a movie.

The movie “Marina” is a Belgian production. Matteo Simoni plays the main character “Rocco” and he loves the part! A lot of the scenes were shot in the Belgian town of Verviers. The Grand Theatre in Verviers, for example, represents the Carnegie Hall in New York. The accordion solo in the movie is, of course, played be the real Rocco, while Matteo Simoni represents him standing on stage and singing. In the movie, real-life Rocco actually also features in the movie. He only has a small part, however, as the owner of the music shop, where he bought his accordion all those years ago. And he looked at the recordings over and over again and also repeatedly visited the set. As he says, it was a great experience for him to be a spectator watching his own life being caught on film. He is delighted, as for him this movie is also a symbol for 50 million immigrant workers who left their home country and went into the world.

Today, Rocco Granata only does what he enjoys. His last two albums with Jazz and Bossanova did not sell so well, because they don’t cater to the masses. But he doesn’t mind. He had a great time playing the numbers, and this is what is most important to him. The movie “Marina” is due to be released in the fall.Les Flamands et les Wallons l’aiment tous autant. Le petit  Rocco était déjà à cette époque un  très bon joueur d’accordéon. Etant jeune homme il partait contre la volonté de son père  en train à Bruxelles et repérait là-bas  dans un magasin de musique son accordéon de rêve. Il coûtait  25.000 francs belges, mais il n’avait pas autant d‘argent. Bref Rocco arrivait à convaincre le commerçant de payer l’accordéon en échelons et de le lui donner tout de suite. D’une manière ou une autre Rocco avait réussi à  faire croire cet homme à son rêve.

A  20 ans Rocco composait sur cet accordéon le tube Marina, tout simplement comme ça dans un bar. C’était pendant un de ces concerts dans un bar à Diest. Les autres musiciens du groupe  dans lequel il jouait voulaient faire une petite pause. Rocco continuait à jouer encore un peu. Au mur il y avait une publicité pour des cigarettes de la marque Marina et sur le poster à côté on voyait une très jolie jeune femme.

Rocco fredonnait une mélodie: Marina, Marina, Marina…..il jouait un peu sur son accordéon et la mélodie apparaissait de nulle part …

Un  tube était né. Le lendemain il écrivait un texte sur sa mélodie joyeuse. A sa grande déception aucune maison de disque ne voulait avoir cette chanson.

Mais de nouveau Rocco n’abandonnait pas et il sortait la chanson en propre régie. Il faisait tirer 300 disques à ses propres frais. Tout d’un coup l’envi d’acheter un disque devenait de plus en plus grand. Tout le monde voulait écouter cette chanson! C’est devenu un tube et dans le monde entier beaucoup de personnes peuvent encore aujourd’hui chanter cette mélodie quand ils entendent le prénom Marina

Jusqu’aujourd’hui il a été sorti d’innombrable fois en couverture. „Marina“ a été vendu au moins cent million de fois ou peut-être  encore plus souvent. Rocco ne voudrait pas mentionner les chiffres exacts. Mais une chose est sûre, puisqu’il a gardé tous les droits sur cette chanson il est aujourd’hui un homme qui se porte bien.

Il est chanteur, compositeur et a sa propre maison de disque. Dans les années 70 il avait le George Baker Selection, Tee Set et Alexander Curly sous contrat. Il vit depuis 44 ans avec son grand amour Rosi. Il aime bien jouer au golf et boire un verre de vin avec ses amis.  A la maison avec  ses enfants et petits-enfants on mange la pasta et on savoure le style de vie italien en Belgique. C’est comme ça que Rocco se sent le mieux. Rocco Granata est comme une figure symbolique, l’italien, le travailleur immigré qui a réussi! Effectivement c’est  une histoire de réussite touchante. De andere muzikanten in de band, waarin hij speelde, wilden een kleine pauze nemen. Rocco speelde nog een beetje door. Aan de muur hing een sigarettenreclame voor het merk Marina en daarnaast op de poster stond een mooie jonge vrouw afgebeeld.

Rocco neuriede een deuntje: Marina, Marina, Marina …..hij speelde een beetje op de accordeon en de melodie ontstond zomaar uit het niets…

Een hit was geboren. De volgende dag schreef hij een tekst op zijn vrolijke melodie. Tot zijn teleurstelling wilden platenmaatschappijen dit nummer niet hebben. Maar nogmaals opgeven was niets voor Rocco en hij gaf het lied zelf uit. Op zijn eigen kosten drukte hij driehonderd platen. Plotseling wilden steeds meer mensen deze plaat kopen. Iedereen wilde het lied horen! Het werd een hit, en vandaag de dag, zijn er nog veel mensen die dit nummer zingen bij het horen van de naam “Marina”.

Het werd tot op de dag van vandaag ontelbare keren uitgegeven, ook als een cover. „Marina“ is  ten minste honderd miljoen keer verkocht, misschien zelfs vaker. Rocco wil geen exacte aantallen noemen. Maar het is zeker dat hij nu een welvarend man is, want hij heeft alle rechten op het lied zelf gehouden.

Hij is zanger, componist en heeft zijn eigen platenmaatschappij. In de jaren zeventig had hij de George Baker Selection, Tea Set en Alexander Curly onder contract. Al sinds 44 jaar is hij samen met zijn grote liefde Rosi. Hij golft graag en drinkt met plezier een glaasje wijn met vrienden. Thuis met  kinderen en kleinkinderen staat er pasta op tafel en genieten ze hier in België, ver van het thuisland, van de Italiaanse levensstijl. Zo voelt Rocco  zich het beste. Rocco Granata is het symbool van de Italiaanse, buitenlandse werknemer die iets bereikt heeft! Inderdaad een ontroerend succesverhaal. Hij is erg trots en blij over het feit dat zijn leven in 2013 verfilmd werd.
